Makiko Hicher

Makiko Hicher

Born in Japan and based in Montreal, Makiko Hicher creates ceramics where the simplicity of forms meets the depth of time. Trained in throwing in Japan, she develops a sober and refined language, in harmony with nature, history, and the memory of objects.

Her pieces are distinguished by a very personal glazing technique. Using natural sponges, she applies the material as one would lay down colors on a canvas, revealing organic textures, marine nuances, and surfaces that appear to have lived.

In her universe, the ceramics sometimes evoke sunken treasures, objects forgotten at the bottom of the sea, slowly transformed by water, algae, shells, and the passage of centuries. Poetic and silent works, where beauty is born from the trace, from melancholy, and from time that leaves its imprint.
