Marc Martel
Marc Martel (1933-2016), born in Lévis, was a multi-talented artist: draftsman, painter, engraver, jeweler, and sculptor. He distinguished himself above all by his exceptional mastery of bronze.
A graduate in arts from the University of Ottawa, in literature from Laval University, and in visual arts from the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières, Marc Martel continued his exploration of materials through internships in Europe, the United States, and Canada. His fascination with material guided his entire artistic journey. His career includes 25 exhibitions, 13 of which were solo, as well as a retrospective in 2001.
His bronze sculptures, particularly his series of patinated birds that marked the last two decades of his life, are among his most admired works. Since 1993, the artist created more than 240 models, each cast in an edition of only ten copies.
Each work, a celebration of life and movement, bears a unique name, revealed by the bird itself according to Martel: "I don't choose the name, the bird imposes it." Pieces like *Le Fascinant* (The Fascinating One) and *Le Grand Doux* (The Great Gentle One) attest to his ability to imbue bronze with character, finesse, and presence.
